It's not that they have the balls to play P5 teams, it's that they know they are falling behind by a large margin so they went to 9 conference games and try to schedule more P5s so that when they lose it's not as embarrassing. Their low end teams are getting beat by MAC squads and they need to hide that. Why else do you think Delany is pushing for p5s to only play p5s?
