Trends would suggest that this will be the case

It's growing at a faster rate than other renewable resources like wind. And the one advantage that solar has over wind is that the power can be supplied off the grid. You can't exactly put a massive wind turbine in your back yard.

Sure, but I'm making a more abstract case that industrialization led to an explosion, eventually, in all kinds of technologies that made money-making adventures like Bill Gates's even feasible.

There are better examples, of course.
