You should limit your travels to the Pacific side and hills. The East Coast stinks. There are two Marriott resorts on the Pacific that are great.
ETA: Our first trip there we put over 1000 miles on the rental in 5 days. We went everywhere. Second trip we chilled close to the resort and took it easy.

The big Marriott resort is Los Suenos. It is about 15 minutes from Jaco where a lot of your adventure activities take place. I would stay somewhere around there and enjoy the beach and go out on the water. Manuel Antonio is nice but I was glad we went on a one day trip there instead of staying in the area.
