The nation would come together again IMO. We are a vastly different nation now for a lot of reasons, but we are still Americans and we would still come together.
That said, though I view the Bush presidency as a failure overall, I do think that his general nature and demeanor in the direct aftermath of 9/11 helped bring the country together.
He also enjoyed the benefit of being a new president. Obama has so much water under the bridge and has proven time and time again to be ineffective and late to the party, that he would be quite easy to blame.
I think he would have his hands full, through fault of his own and no fault of his own, in stepping in and uniting the nation. I think any threats he would make for revenge would be viewed with skeptical eyes, even by his most staunch supporters.
In the end though, at least for a few months, we would stand united in spite of our leadership and political differences.
