Agree completely. And the more rules the better. Especially those that "chill" Hate speech and hate thought. We must not tolerate dissent from the current societal norm. I'm with you. The less public dissent , the better. No longer will we just avert our eyes, as we have done in the past. If they want to be provocateurs or participate in clumsy social commentary that is intolerant, than we must ostracize them and threaten them with sanction. If they would confine their speech to the proper parameters that have Universal agreement, they would not have to be threatened.

Either way we must demonstrate our commitment to Tolerance by being intolerant of their dissent from our demand that they be tolerant.

Solid rebuttal. I give it a six for ability to correctly use quote tool.

His post doesn't make any sense. Is his position that landowners should be prevented by the government from having a say in what happens on their property?

The chapter was under pressure from local alumni, DKE National, and LSU. They didn't stand a chance and didn't have a choice.

Back in the olden days, before the national broadcast of everything that anybody could consider offensive, it was easy to get away with the signs; it was a campus joke and didn't go much further than that.

And honestly, there were several that were torn down within minutes of placement because they were completely filthy, even by DKE's own standards. But most would last the day if they were funny enough.

As for those in this thread who complain about Dekes being offensive and childish and tasteless, you've been around (providing entertainment to the chapter) in one form or another for many, many years.

And the more you bitch and complain and whine, the funnier it gets.

Howdy Cuz

I'm sad but in no way surprised. I wonder what the news media would have done with the Homecoming decorations in 88? "Quayle to Bentsen: Don't worry I've screwed an old goat before" complete with the giant pom pom goat in the yard with a big screw sticking out of its arse.

And then there was Reggie Cobb's nose. A classic.

My favorite was not a gameday banner. It said something like "Crab boil at the Kappa house tonight 6-9". I remember watching our president standing on the DKE house lawn demanding your president take it down and him laughing and shaking his head "no". Good times.

Nobody else is struggling with it. Maybe you could try reading it slowly.

JPinLondon -- That's fricking funny!!! And how is it offensive? It was accurate. And the player who it is aimed at admitted that he has that particular preference.

Mikey Goldmill -- Is Sam Houston "getting the D" considered a good or bad thing? Was that meant to be a positive or negative thing for Sam Houston? Then compare that to gays like Michael Sam. That's why some could consider it offensive. "Getting the D" was portrayed as a negative/bad thing and used to describe gay people as well as what would happen to Sam Houston.

Mikey, are you contending that IN ADDITION to full acceptance and lack of discrimination towards gays (of which I wholeheartedly accept and embrace - I work for two lesbians and have a few close gay friends)...

are you contending that I ALSO can't make fun of the fact that gay men stick their dicks up the asses of other gay men and I find that act to be rather unappealing and thus laugh at it being double-entendre'd towards an LSU opponent?

Seriously??

It's not that the free speech in question is not assholeish or sophomoric. It's that the DEMAND that students demonstrate Uniformity Of Belief or face the consequences is counter productive to the very mission of a University. A University should not impose a certain Ideological Orthodoxy on it's student body. Sophomores should be allowed to be , well, sophomoric. There should not be a societal demand that the biggest dipshits on campus act like graduates of The Dr. Phil Finishing School For Wayward Nannies. Let the Dekes be Dekes and you be the awesome guy that you are.

Have you ever been around Free Speech Alley at lunch time? People go there and parade around every belief you can imagine and LSU allows it to happen. There is no trampling of free speech going on here and there is no "demand for uniformity of thought." Things like banners on campus property can impact the image of the University. LSU has every right and interest to interject when banners displayed on their property aren't in line with the image they wish to have.

No, that's not at all what I'm saying. I'm saying that is why some people may be offended because that is the question you asked. I'm also saying that LSU has an image it wishes to maintain so it is fully within their interest to have input in banners hanging on their property.

Yes Seriously.
No time for mirth. Political Correctness ensures that.
Fundamentalist Liberalism is SERIOUS business.
Only the most humorless amongst us need apply.
As so many on this thread prove.

In 1973, a banner was raised on Johnston hall before the Bama game that said the Tide was a menstrual flow. Campus cops took it down. We loved it.
