Man, my little shanty town goes through waves.
Great prosperity to lots of deaths and being thrust back into the stone age.
I ran out of stone of all things. And then I ran out of tools, because I wasn't paying attention. Good thing I didn't use any iron that I was initially given/collected.
Right now, I think I'm on the upswing from a severe low. I mean, there's houses that aren't populated anymore.
Next, I need to prioritize building of the mine...if only I knew how to prioritize these things. Oh, and to do that I have to collect stone from around the land.

Here's what has helped me as I've taken the big hit and am doing well right now:
Get your merchants going. You can buy a lot of the stone and iron there until you get your population up.
Don't get overly OCD about maxing out every job. If they are producing enough food let some stay as laborers. When people are getting replaced at a steady rate you can maintain production and it is easier to balance out.
Upgrade houses to stone as you can. They will help with the firewood situation tremendously.
If you can buy herbs from the merchant just do that and not have anyone in the profession until you're in real good shape. I bought some and they've used only 2.
Fisherman can help out a lot during the winter as well as hunters and gatherers. They pretty much have unlimited resources to grab from if you don't cut down the forest. I tend to set them up in areas that I will not cut down at all.
