also the pointer after it freezes completely disappears. don't know if that adds any extra insight

Tap some keys a few times to unstick (most likely control if you don't notice any erratic stuff). When you click links, do they open in a new tab every time? If so, CTRL is probably stuck.
Or this might not be the issue at all.
