NFL can do what they want.

It's not a criminal proceeding nor a court of law. Double jeopardy doesn't apply to court of public opinion. It's a private league and employer. His punishment by the NFL is not risk of loss of liberty - jail time...they can fire his arse if they want just the same as if he did nothing wrong.

There is this little thing called collective bargaining between players and the league. The league cannot simply do what it wants.
