Without watching it again (definitely won't be doing that), but I feel like it would have been hard for both to stay in. 1. They would have been sacrificing crucial yards to stay in and 2, both were wrapped it, so it's harder to bring yourself to the turf when the defenders have you held up and are driving you. For them to go down never they even made contact would be giving up even more yards.
While it would have been ideal to punch it in as time expired, the main goal on that drive is to score no matter what. A more fair criticism may be calling plays towards the sideline opposed to the middle of the field, but again, the main goal is to score, so you call the plays that will do that. Like I said, I didn't watch any of the game again, and was drinking, so I could be totally wrong.
