She lived in SW Arkansas, you know she had to have met former slaves.

Used to mow a ladies yard when I was a kid who lost her husband in WWI, one of her sons in WWII and a grandson in Vietnam. She passed away about 10 years ago. She told me when I was a kid if I was ever drafted to run like hell.
