I knew a couple, in college, that had a tempestuous relationship. Eventually, she had enough of it, and got out-- he went bonkers, and killed her.
He was sentenced to death, but eventually it was reduced:

Next door neighbor was murdered, chopped up in little pieces, and thrown off the seawall in Galveston.
