The one point no one has brought up yet is the total cost of ownership UberX vs Taxi. Let's say 8 times you UberX it's cheaper than a cab, then twice it's 8x the fare. However, when you compare the cost of all taxis vs the cost of all Uber's, it's constant with Uber winning the battle of convenience. This argument to me lends itself a better viewpoint than simply being complacent with any surge price regardless.

people are free to individually make this analysis and use it to make their own choices

nobody is forgetting this or ignoring this. hell, that's my entire argument

if they don't, they're devoting personal resources to goals they prefer and paying for it via possibly less efficient uses of their money
