Position Rankings Question

Ok, so I mentioned in an earlier thread that this is my first year playing fantasy so I'm trying to catchup for my draft tonight. Hopefully this will be my last (likely dumb) question.
Why are RBs considered the most valuable position? I just looked at rankings and projections and AP is ranked as the top player but his projection is 250 points whereas Manning's is 400. Is it just because there are fewer RBs who can score that many points? Seems like the exact opposite in that there are 3-4 QBs who are studs whereas there's lots of RBs.
What am I missing?

The fall off from the top 10 RBs to the guys in the 20-30 range is way more significant than the fall off from the #1 QB to the #10 QB.

Most leagues require you to start 2 RBs and a flex and just 1 QB. It is much easier to find a QB who will produce good numbers than it is to find 2-3 RBs.
If you take a Manning/Rodgers/Brees early, you need to consider how that will affect the rest of your lineup.

This makes total sense. Didn't think of the need for 2 RBs.
Thanks!

basically, there are a lot less good ones. So you'll want to get one earlier then later.
That doesnt mean you should reach for them though. You're main objective with each pick, especially early, is to maximize value.
It might mean taking WR-WR in the 1st two rounds, or QB-WR, or TE-WR.

I just went WR-WR in a draft and I love my team, mainly because I was able to grab Stacy, Vereen, and Gerhart at a value. Waited for a QB and still got Kaep.

I'll give you a real example:
In my main league last year I came in 3rd place. I drafted WR/RB/RB with my first three picks and ended up getting Luck in the 6th round.
The 2nd place team drafted RB/WR/QB in the first three rounds.
The 1st place team drafted RB/RB/QB snagging Antonio Brown in the 5th and Josh Gordon in the 9th.
I honestly don't recall any of our eventual league winners drafting a QB with their first pick. Good luck

I don't completely agree with that if it's PPR.
The difference, in my league between the #1 QB and #10 QB was 10 ppg. it was the same for the #1 RB and the #10 RB, 10ppg.
There isnt' a huge drop from the 3rd best qb to the 13th best qb, maybe 5 ppg.
You can find 20 rb's that will only be 4-5 ppg at most behind the 5 through 10 best backs.
If you want Brees or Manning, no one will call you an idiot for taking them in the first round. But you can get a top 6 or 7 QB after round 10.
You can't get a top 20 back or receiver after round 10, well you can, but it's luck.

True, but the question is what was the drop off from #1 to #25. Which is a borderline starter(theoretically) in a 12 team league.

Well no shite, thats why they are called sleepers.

my league is the same way.
top 4 guys from last year all picked at least 2 WR's in their first 3 picks. Some went with 2RB/2WR in first four, some went 3WR/1RB in first 4.
I've scored the most in my league two years in a row. I went RB/WR/WR/WR last year and WR/WR/RB/WR the year before.
Went WR/WR/RB/Gronk this year, but i like my team a lot. I will say i picked last all three years, so that makes a big difference in how i picked.
In a PPR league, top WR are consistent and score a lot. I want 3 really good WR's and 2 decent RB's to start. I don't mind starting a Danny Woodhead, or a similar 11-12 ppg guy at RB if i know i'm getting 20/game from my 3 wr's.

that argument was made for the qb. People are drafting Stafford and Luck before round 5. Rivers and Dalton finished tied for 3rd, in my league, last year and are going after round 10 in most leagues.

I have too this year on 2 occasions. Ive also won leagues taking a QB in the 1st round. If you know how to fill your roster in the mid rounds with potential break out players, then it's pretty easy to assemble a team that way.

Im saying that you can get a top 10 player at any position after the 10th round. Its not probable, but its possible. If it was a certainty to not be able to get a top 10 WR/RB after the 10th round, then no one would take a QB before the 10th.

I don't know why anyone does, unless your taking Brees/Manning/Rodgers, maybe Luck/Brady this year.
I'd rather take Vereen or Jennings or Gore in round 5 or 6 than Luck, knowing i can get a QB just as good as luck in round 11. QB value in the late rounds is not much different than the value at round 5 and 6. the RB/WR at round 5 or 6 are light years ahead of those at round 11, and i am of the belief that rounds 5-9 is where your season is most likely won or loss. You draft contributors there, you have a great shot at winning your league. you draft busts there, you most likely aren't making the playoffs.
