Do any of you fans and graduates of Louisiana State University actually know how the current "Director of Athletic Bands" was selected?

It was by default, not by interview and selection. The traditional process of doing a national search for a "DOAB" was not done by the University/Music School/Athletic Department.

It was simply a matter of promoting the next person in line. Sometimes the next person in line is perfectly competent and qualified to be an Associate or Assistant, but DOES NOT possess the necessary qualities and talents to be the overall leader. This is the case here. (Kind of like what happened with ex-LSU running backs coach Larry Porter, who was hired as Head Coach at the University of Memphis)

There has been a noticeable decline in all aspects of TGBFTL since the current DOAB has been in place and that will not change until a change is made and a national search is conducted for a replacement. (This was done twice just recently to find and hire an a "Director of Bands" (Symphonic Bands) at LSU. The current DOAB
