I've watched documentaries on it, it was supposedly banned in the early 1900's because it was thought to be a contributing factor to black violence. Not making this up.

it was banned much later than that, more precisely the 30s. And blacks were one reason. Also messicans.

supposedly it made you "horny" and we know black and messicans when they get an erection they are going to rape white woman!

BTW, the reason it remains illegal is three fold
a) pharma - cannabis is a wonder drug, from pain relief to depression to anxiety. Its also cheap, relatively easy to grow and isn't patented. They want it stopped
b) police - police make good money off cannabis prohibition. they don't want that gravy train to stop
c) victorian era sensibility still dominate in older generations. Getting intoxicated for any reason is still looked down on by older folks.

That was cocaine.

Weed laws were initially intended to get rid of Mexicans in the southwest then it was used by the Nixon administration to get rid of hippies who opposed the govt.

You will find that most drug laws originated from fears of certain groups. In the west, it was fear of Mexican immigrants. East it was black men and white women.

Harry Anslinger: "“Most marijuana smokers are Negroes, Hispanics, jazz musicians, and entertainers. Their satanic music is driven by marijuana, and marijuana smoking by white women makes them want to seek sexual relations with Negroes, entertainers, and others.”
