Fredo had a good heart, but he was weak and stupid. And at that particular moment the stupidity quality reigned supreme, plus he just really loved to fish.

I think he just knew the gig was up and there was no way he was getting out of it. He resigned himself to face his death with what dignity he could. Hence the praying the Hail Mary.

Fredo knew after his mom died Michael would have him killed, that's why he tried to make up with him at her funeral. I think he already had an idea what was up when Al, of all people, was taking he and Michaels boy fishing. If he didn't, he certainly knew when they called the sin back in.
Heck, he had to know it was coming. He ran off in Cuba after Michael realized he set him up at the Tahoe compound.

I always thought that Fredo had blocked the possibility of Michael killing him out his mind once Michael "forgave" him at the funeral. He was that naive imo. It wasn't until he saw that Michael's son wasn't going fishing with him that it may have triggered the possibility of Michael taking him out, but it was too late to do anything by then.
As for Michael, I don't blame him for having Fredo killed. He tried once, so what's to stop him from doing it again. I no longer view you as a brother if you make an attempt on my life.

Fredo was like a kid.Al said let's go and he hopped in.
Maybe Fredo didn't know how to work the outboard.
But,he was driving when his Father got gunned down,wasn't he?
