I seriously don't understand starting an addiction when you know how bad it is for you. It's not like somebody who has never smoked all of a sudden says, "Oh, I am addicted to nicotine, I need to start smoking!"

You can hear about the "benefits" of drinking or drugs, but I don't get how someone can explain how wonderful smoking is to convince someone to take the first cig.

I don't view smokers as automatically less intelligent, just that they gave in to a destructive form of peer pressure at some point. I did too, from time to time, just not with anything that destructive.
