All I can offer to this thread is the irony that I am an atheist and have an amazing, beautiful daughter with Downs that I cherish and who teaches me peace and love and happiness in quantities I can never repay her.
I'm not really sure this is so much an atheist v. believer issue.
I know many Christians you would never know are Christians unless they told you so, and I know atheists who you would swear are Christians.
It simply has to do with one simple concept/belief: do you believe human life is sacred and should be protected? If so, then it doesn't matter what form/condition that life takes.

I'm actually of the belief that being an atheist makes human life more precious and sacred, not less, due to there not being an afterlife.

As an aside, I have far less respect for Dawkins' intellectual prowess than most here. Not because he isn't bright, but because of his use of the capacity. His atheistic proselytizing creates a loud voice in the arena. It drowns out more reasonable points of view. So he is taken to represent a forefront of "atheistic thought".
The squeaky wheel gets the oil. Dawkins bathes in that oil.
