Creating a course is a piece of cake. Choose a theme such as urban, alpine, or desert, then set a few key variables, like how many trees, how much water, and how many hills you’d like your course to have. You’ll have a playable course that you can name and publish for anyone to play in minutes.

But the real pleasure is in customizing the random design that the game’s algorithms come up with.

Placing bunkers in strategic locations, repositioning flags, and adding geological features such as rocks and trees throughout the course is enough to add a personal touch and make the course feel as though it was designed by a human mind. This can be done in under half an hour.

Spend a couple of hours and you can dive much deeper into the design mode by raising and lowering terrain, precisely altering fairway width, adjusting the cut of heavy rough, altering green size and slope, and even reshaping and reordering holes.

Really ambitious designers can set about adding a wide variety of details, including storm shelters, bridges, benches, a wide variety of wildlife, clubhouses, and parking lots.

I’m typically not one to devote much time to making my own content, but I spent hours on my courses. And I eventually published my favourite and created a special tournament for it, open to anyone who cares to play.

If enough people do this – and I hope they do – there’s potential for The Golf Club to offer virtually unlimited new golf experiences.
