Holding all else equal, having more options is always better.
Scenario 1:
play outside
Scenario 2:
play outside (or)
play video games
Scenario 2 is better than scenario 1. You can do everything in scenario 1 that you want plus another option. That is pretty much what I see this argument coming down to. That people can do whatever they did in the 80's but they have an option to do more.
Why do people choose to do things differently than the 80's? Because they decide to. You still have that option.
The only possible negative to options is if a person makes an inferior choice. I still think that having the opportunity to make the decision creates a given appreciation of the decision you make, whether it is to play outside or play video games (in example above).
