My secret is I never look at app stores when I want an app that does X for me. I always google best app for X and read the top lists and reviews then decide from there. App Store curation, especially on iOS, is and always has been a steaming pile.
ETA: I've found that iMore has the best/most articles along the lines of "7 apps for X" or "The 4 best X apps"
