I've never asked them. But to be honest, of the 5 that I can think of off the top of my head, I could see at least one of them being motivated by this. His dad and mom are both pretty over the top competitive when it comes to youth sports. Of the other 4, 2 have never played sports that I know of and the other 2 play sports but are not really that over the top with it.

I'd be willing to bet there's a lot of that going on these days. FWIW, I didn't go to kindergarten and I turned 18 about two weeks before entering LSU, no ill effects. Hell there were kids younger than me fighting and dying for us in WWII.

Some do it for social maturity reasons, but many dads do it for sports or go along with the idea because of athletic advantages.

There were times that I wished I had stayed back one year for athletic reasons.

Eta: it probably became more common after the book Outliers became popular.
