I guess my mother thought that being held back in k-5 suggested something about intelligence and sent me on because I was a bright kid. I think that the extra year and confidence I would have gained from being a year older would have done wonders for me academically in the long run. I always had trouble in high school prioritizing schoolwork until I got older.
I personally know 5 families who held their kid back in K-5 an extra year or waited to start them until they were six. They all cite the exact things you discussed.

Your argument is invalid. Alabama is an outlier state for kids needing to be held back.
