I had a similar situation. I originally bought a TXSR608. About a year into it the HDMI board failed. I sent it in for warranty work. After hanging on to it for a while they informed me that the replacement boards were on back order for a long time, so they sent me the upgraded model the TXNR609 for free. I was a happy camper...until a year later when the HDMI board in it failed....right around the time my original and only valid warranty was up...
I called them to see if the could make an exception and deal with it under warranty, it was only out of warranty by a month or so. They couldn't. To get the work done by them was going to be expensive, so I asked if i could purchase an HDMI board from them and replace it myself. They wouldn't do it. My only options were to send it in a let them fix it for whatever it would cost, or to do their trade in program. Honestly I didn't trust the HDMI board in either option to last very long, so I bit the bullet and bought a Pioneer Elite VSX-43. I've had it for a year and had zero problems.
Honestly, doing your research in what receiver to buy, onkyo always come up to the top of the list as far as features for price. They jam pack all the features of high end receivers into great price points. That's why I bought my onkyo. But the quality was obviously not there.

Onkyo had a run for several years with hdmi issues. Their reputation took such a hit for the issue that they've doubled down on the hdmi feature with their newer units so I wouldn't bat an eye at purchasing a new unit.
Fwiw I had a 606 .. Last unit before the hdmi issue started cropping up.. And just upgraded to a refurb 626 during one of those woot/amazon $289 deals and I have to say this unit is absolutely amazing for the price. Would recommend.
