LSU drumline during offensive plays back in the day? When/why did it stop?

I watched a little of the 1987 game vs UF on ECL last night and every time Hodson dropped back to pass, the drumline started playing.

Did the coaches tell the band that it helped tip off the defense when they played it every time Hodson dropped back?

Run/pass? Listen for the drums!

I was in the band in those days. The drums played on every play, not just passes.

The drums playing during plays have been replaced with the 2nd and 3rd down cheers, which didn't exist until the 90s.

Thank God the rules about the band playing during plays have changed. There is nothing more annoying than going to a high school football game and hearing the band play whenever they want to, as if there isn't even a game going on. I am all about bands and I love them...but your job is not to play during game action. You are NOT the main attraction.
