Awesome OT replies but to be serious. I hate that beggars like to get right on top of you. They do it as a form of intimidation and most people are trained to be too polite to call them out. I don't let people get close to me in situations like that. There is nothing wrong, and it is the right/safe thing to do, to tell those people loudly to "stay back". I do it all the time and the more aggressive beggars tend to get mouthy but they won't approach when you do that.
If they continue to close on you then at least you know they are a threat before they are in touching distance. There is zero reason for someone to come within ten feet of you at night in a parking lot.
