If they did it right, the "Vampire" parts of it wouldn't be that prominent. The books were really about existential angst, loneliness and inability to connect with others more than anything.
Heck, Memnoch the Devil had hardly any vampire stuff in it at all. I think it's roots were Rice searching for answers to some age old questions.

That's exactly what they were. She pretty much said so herself when she released "Christ The Lord"
