A federal judge ruled Friday that the NCAA's limits on what major college football and men's basketball players can receive for playing sports "unreasonably restrain trade" in violation of antitrust laws.
U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken, in a 99-page ruling in favor of a group of plaintiffs led by former UCLA basketball player Ed O'Bannon, issued an injunction that will prevent the NCAA the "from enforcing any rules or bylaws that would prohibit its member schools and conferences from offering their FBS football or Division I basketball recruits a limited share of the revenues generated from the use of their names, images, and likenesses in addition to a full grant-in-aid."

Big news, if not somewhat expected.

What do you guys think will come of it?

frick, college sports are about to just be another professional organization, what's the damn point now? Should we even make them enroll in classes?

Looks like Wilken's ruling doesn't lift restrictions on college athletes signing endorsements

I think it could be used as a recruiting tool for bigger schools. "Hey, if you come here you will make way more money with your names on jerseys, etc" of course if a kid is good enough for people to care about buying things with his name or likeness he is probably going to a bigger school anyway.

Need to read full decision, but it seems NCAA friendly in that it buys them time. The grand bargain has yet to be struck.

Wilken still allowing NCAA to set restrictions on how much athletes can earn while in school is why this isn't that bad for NCAA.

You should be excited about this ruling if you're:
A) for freedom and B) believe that public university football programs are private entities.

The second colleges started making money off of selling these kids' jerseys was the moment today's verdict was destined to happen.
"It's the way we've always done things" is not a valid reason to keep an antiquated system in place.

Honestly $5k extra a year isn't going to ruin amateurism. That is already what the Power 5 agreed on.

I'm going to try to say this in a reasonable and civilized manner,,,
frick Ed O'Bannon with a flaming aids cactus.
These athletes need to step back and count their blessings and realize how fortunate they are just to have the opportunities that they have. It's an honor to wear your school's colors and play a sport in front of thousands of fans.
Plus, the entitled mentality of feeling violated by having your likeness used in a video game makes me sick. I just wish I was notable enough to be in a video game
