AS Roma will start the season with a lot higher expectations than last after staying right on Juventus' heels for the Scudetto, finishing with a point total that would have seen them win it in any but two seasons in the entire history of Serie A.

The Scudetto race projects to be bit more open this year. It would surprise to see Juve replicate their record setting season, especially after losing Conte. However, expect increased competition at the top of the table. Napoli should be just as good as last year, Fiorentina is unlikely be as decimated by injuries and it was only a matter of time before Mazzarri had Inter (who will doubtlessly benefit from the "no Champions League points bump" as well) back in the race.

Champions League is a different story. AS Roma, unfortunately, is a group of death generator since they will likely be in the 4th pod.

While certainly having the top end quality to potentially get through any group, most level headed fans aren't thinking this team is deep enough for a serious run without a very unlikely, very favorable draw (especially without Strootman). This season it's probably better to simply go into the CL guns-a-blazin' regardless of the competition but, above all, focus squarely on the Scudetto and getting back to the CL next year with an ever improving squad.

The roster so far:

------------------------De Sanctis ------------------------
------------------------ (Skorupski) ------------------------

--------------- Benatia -------- Castan ---------------
---------------(Astori, Romangoli, ?) ---------------

Maicon --------------------------------------------- Cole
(Torosidis) ------------------------------ (Emanuelson, Balzaretti)

------------------------ De Rossi -------------------------------
------------- Pjanic ------------- Naingollan / Strootman -------
---------------- (Keita, Ucan, Parades) ---------------

Iturbe --------------- Totti --------------- Gervinho
----------- (Ljalic, Destro, Florenzi, Sanabria)-----------

Needed/likely moves to come:

1. 4th choice depth/rotational CB so Romagnoli can be loaned
2. The attack is pretty good and decently deep but every sign points to Sabatini/Garcia still keen to add one more elite difference making, creative player in the front three and possibly a depth/experienced center forward who fits better than Borriello who'll likely be loaned again.

Possible moves before the mercato ends:

1. Sanabria and/or Parades on loan for the season. Both figure large in future plans and may stay since the roster isn't very deep depending but may also get one more year on loan to another Serie A side. A Romangoli loan spell is also possible. He's already good enough to be the 4th CB in the rotation but more pt would be better when another CB is added. Seems Ucan has already shown more than enough to be in the midfield rotation.

2. The major shakeup possibility:

Benatia is sold:
Just because he's agreed to a raise doesn't mean Sabatini wouldn't move him in a flash for the right price. If he does, Roma will go after 2 CBs along lines of Manolas, Basa, Chiriches instead of just one CB but will also likely up the € ante significantly in his attempt to bring another big time attacking talent.

There's a pretty good chance Ljalic is sold regardless and even Destro isn't untouchable if it brings in a player Sabatini/Garcia covets. The deal for Konoplyanka seems unlikely but that the negotiations have been this advanced suggests that Sabatini is set on bringing on a similar caliber player and Ljalic would be the most likely odd man out if that happens.

I'm all aboard the Roma train this year, if you allow me on it! I'd watched most games last year and really enjoy watching them, and have been impressed by their signings, mostly due to Salih Ucan's hair. I hope to watch them, along with the rest of Serie A, even more this season.

Why do you have Pjanic on the left of the midfield and Strootman on the right? Just curious because, correct me if I'm wrong, but Pjanic almost always plays on the right side of the midfield, right?

In.

Always enjoy your Roma insight, WM. Do you think Pjanic will be a Roma lifer? He's becoming my favorite player.

One of my friends I grew up with is a huge Juve fan, so I heard it from him last season.

Just what Roma needed against Chievo considering all the injury issues: 3 early goals from Destro, Llajic and Totti and cruising for the last 60 minutes. Yanga-Mbiwa has been really impressive although if he plays against Bayern -- not sure if he or Astori will start next to Manolas since Castan is still out -- and keeps up all the fancy dribbling tricks and backheels in our area I'll have a heart attack.

Vs Bayern Tuesday:

Sellout of over 70k should provide a crackling atmosphere at the Olimpico.

I expect both teams to get chances but it should be a great match. Roma will try to pressure early and hit on counters but my concern is that we have only 3 healthy midfielders (Paredes and Ucan have looked good but won't play unless there's an injury).

Missing both Keita and Strootman strips Garcia of the fresh midfield sub he likes to bring in around 75' and that could be costly against Bayern since our midfield will be doing a lot more chasing than normal. It already hurt against City and Bayern is on another level.

I can't say that I'm confident our defense will stand up to Bayern's attack but I do think we pose a real threat against their style with Totti plus the smooth passing midfield looking for Iturbe and Gervinho racing around their CBs.

One key will be how Maicon and Cole stand up to Bayern's superb wingers and not force Iturbe and Gervinho to be drawn out of counter attacking positions to help too often. Torosidis could be a surprise start since he's probably the most defensively sound RB/LB.

All things considered, I think most Roma fans will be content with Roma simply coming out an punching equally with Bayern considering their quality and experience regardless of how the actual goals fall. However, I also doubt Bayern is overconfident about getting a full 3 points.

Probable lineup:

De Sanctis

Maicon -- Manolas -- Astori/Mbiwa -- Cole

--- De Rossi ---

Naingollan -- Pjanic

--- Totti ---

Iturbe -- Gervinho

Finally a win away at Cagliari that has ironically been a fixture Roma where never gets 3 points. 18yo Primavera team winger Daniele Verde was called up due to the crisis and had 2 assists.

After Ljajic left with a knock, the attack consisted of Verde 18yo, Sanabria 18yo, Paredes 19yo and Totti 38yo.

This is AS Roma's team of players that were missing due to injury or ACON for matches during the string of draws in January:

It's only a winter signing of a couple of injured backup defenders away from competing for a CL spot by itself:

GK Lobont

RB Torosidis -- CB Manolas -- CB Castan -- LB Florenzi

MF Keita -- MF De Rossi -- MF Strootman

FW Gervinho -- FW Duombia -- FW Iturbe

Bench: Ucan, Sanabria, Ibarbo, Borriello
