Gas heater. No leaks. No corrossion. Gas is on. Circuit breaker not tripped. Water runs through. All clear water.

What might be the culprit and can I fix it without calling a plumber or is best just to call the plumber?

WH's have little "gates" in the electrical that flip open and closed based on a thermostat, just like your AC. When one of mine acted up a few months ago I figured it was a bad element, went and bought all of the parts to replace them. While tinkering around with a voltmeter, I realized that the "gate" just wasn't getting power to the elements. I turned my screwdriver around and gave the thermostat unit a whack, heard a pop as it got "unstuck", and it has worked great ever since.

it might be the theormocouple...really easy to change and only cost about $20.

Do it yourself you will save about $130.
