To what...prove my point? How much money do you think Criterion brings in...say, in comparison to the rest of at home movie sales?
Exactly...
It's not that there is no market for higher quality, or specifically in the case of this argument higher brow films...it's that there is simply not a large enough audience to dedicate more time or money to it than studios already do. If the market was there, there would be no need for this discussion because the studios, liking to make money like they do, would already be mining that territory.
In this case, it's not so much the studios' faults as it is the consumers'.

You mean the same company that put out a four disc set on The Rock (which, BTW, includes an unintentionally hilarious director's commentary from Michael Bay)? The sales on that probably kept the lights on, so good on them, but let's not pretend they don't dumb themselves down. And while I do love Criterion, why do I have to pay $40 for every great old movie? Can't there just be a cheap copy of The Third Man without all the bells and whistles?
