My point is that we (LSU) have now made the #18 some iconic number at LSU. I actually enjoy the idea of handing down a special number for all the reasons you suggest...just disagree that number should have been #18.

Mauck was a solid player and a good guy. So was Hester. But does that suddenly make that number so iconic that it deserves to be preserved above all other in terms of relating it to leadership?

I get that there are a TON of LSU fans that seem to think the sun rose and set on Jacob Hester, so I'm sure that is part of the lore for them. I'm just not one of them. Good player, seemingly a good guy. Fun to watch in 2007.

I'm of the mind that when you choose a number to hand down like this, the player should have done something extraordinary or the player is associated with some tragedy and handing the number down to a deserving player is a way to honor the former player.

The mileage of others clearly varies...

I guess we just disagree on how big a deal it is. I just see it as an honor for a senior leader to wear, usually someone that wasnt a freshmen sensation. So, in my eyes it is almost for an unheralded player, therfore would not be appropriate for a superstar to wear.

#7 on the other hand, has developed into the unofficial label as the teams most talented player.

Just my take.

And your point has nothing to do with the original post of the thread. As said before, its a symbol of leadership and hard workmanship.

Traditions have to start somewhere. Why shouldn't they have started with the solid play of some very good players?
