Dumb thing to say in a conversation about people's ability to raise children in two-parent homes. Everybody is equally capable of not having kids they can't afford.

Now, you're getting into culture. If having children you cannot afford is 'the norm' in your culture then you are at a distinct disadvantage vis-a-vis someone raised in a culture where the norm is NOT having kids till you can afford them.

My parents did not get married until they were in their 30s. First (and only) marriage for both. No kids. I asked them why so late. Answer...'The Great Depression. People didn't get married till they could afford it. We were dating during the Depression and realized we couldn't get married or have kids till later.'

They were poor and uneducated. But they were from a culture that did not rely on a welfare system to support their children.
