I've had to put 3 dogs down so far in my life. It doesn't get easier. Take the day off of work and get it put to sleep. It happens so fast you wont even realize it. You spared it from suffering and have the rest of the day to cry and drink.
May I also suggest you have them cremated. Having to dig that hole in the backyard was worse than the drive to the vet.

We did this for my first dog. The ashes are in a little wooden box at my parents house in an upstairs room that rarely ever gets used. His collar is around the box.
I don't go up there often, but when I do, I always come down smiling.

I did this. Got a stone with my dog's names on it, and planted a tree in my backyard. Buried the cremated remains under the tree, with the stone on top.
