exactly, a year ago he was one of the most confident people I knew and was moving upwards like a rocket, once he got popped the guy wore out very quickly.

it's an immoral and inequitable law that we're discussing as such

That's just the cost of doing something that is illegal.

I like how these threads bring out all of the self righteous pricks. They bitch about freedom until someone points out a restriction of freedom then you should obey the government.

I feel bad for the result of it all, but someone who is obviously as intelligent as he is knows full well the risks he lines himself up for when you participate in all that. It's one thing when the poor souls in the projects get tricked into getting hooked, it's another thing all together when someone highly gets mixed up in it.

Quite a bit, he was ordering in bulk from a silk-road type site, probably what got him caught. He wasn't dealing though.

why is someone ordering in bulk if they arent dealing?

So why did he have enough coke on him to make him take his life rather than deal with the potential jail time? He's a casualty of himself, not the war on drugs. If you are looking for feel good stories or sympathy you need to open your eyes.

Let me shed a tear for the future PHD that got busted using cocaine

Sorry about your friend. Really sad. I don't do coke but have dabbled in the past if someone put it in my face. It's a personal choice and in my opinion doesn't negatively affect your driving or anything. If I faced prison time for bullshite like this, I can't definitively say I wouldn't consider doing the same thing he did. Very, very sad when there are people who commit crimes against other people and don't see jail time.

Blaming "the war on drugs" is a bit misguided on your part.

A good bit misguided. A friend off mine a long time ago was caught with 1k pounds and only served six months in federal prison. It's a shame your friend committed suicide, for more reasons than this.

well a draconian system of punishment, especially for a first offense without any victims, and the ensuing societal scarlet letter of a felony, is kind of a disproportionate price to pay (again, for possessing a natural substance that caused no direct injury to others)

The punishment may, or may not be harsh depending on each persons point of view. For the one who casually uses drugs, I'm sure he believes it's draconian; for the kids of my cousin who recently died from drug use, it's probably just punishment.

Situation sucks but cocaine is a hard drug. Just don't do hard drugs, that's all. Do you think we should legalize it?

How would prison instead of treatment be better in that instance?

how does his possessing cocaine relate to your cousin's children possession/abusing x-drug?
