More quotes from Council Member Guidry: (sorry for typos was trying to keep up with her speaking)

quote:

Why do you want to regulate that? When you step into someone's car you are at their mercy. It's public transportation so we are compelled to make sure the insurance is there, the driver is not a criminal and the vehicle is in good condition. This is what we have to do to protect people's safety. The Uber Black model can do that.

Then there's UberX where anyone and his brother can apply to be a driver using their own personal car. And as a rule, that service UNDERCUTS the rates of our taxi service. And that is the service there has been trouble with. They don't register with their city. They get vehicle and background checks with Uber. And we have cases all over the country that this doesn't work well. The driver has a serious criminal past. They don't do the same background check we do. UberX is not something I want to ride around DC in. But this is something my college daughter would hop right in. I'm sure they must be good. No, that's not the situation. THe problem is when uberx is allowed in that app is allowed into the city, so you can press uberx and get a car totally against the law. So it's really important to understand what we are legislating for.

What are we doing about the possibility of letting UberX in?
