Here's a thread I made about a month ago with some good input from other posters.
I'm staying downtown and plan on walking to Midtown (it looks like it's only 6 blocks or so?) and then taking the rail to and from the game.

Be careful if your path will take you past the Greyhound Station on Gray at Main. It gets sketchy right there. A cab will be 4 or 5 bucks from most downtown hotels. Just be aware of your surroundings like you would in any major city. If you're near the bars along Bagby and Brazos you should be ok. There will be some random bums but they're just mostly looking to bum a smoke or some change.
