Sounds like bullet was too fragile. A 25-06 shooting a 120 gr bullet at about 3000 fps should quickly dispatch any typical sized whitetail deer. The challenge is to be sure the bullet is up to the task. When I got ready to buy my first deer hunting rifle, I was torn between the 25-06 and the 270. At the time, I was living in OR so a future elk hunt was a possiblity. I bought the 270 and have never had a 25-06. If I had a 25-06, I'd certainly not feel undergunned using it to deer hunt. I'd have the same qualifications w/ it that I do all my deer guns: a bullet that I can have a reasonable expectation to enter and exit at whatever range I shoot. I'd prob first try a controlled expansion bullet like the 120 gr Nosler Partition or Accubond, but I'd still do a lot of research.
