The entire movie Johnny bullies and beats up on Daniel with no mercy. Seems he doesn't give a shite about hurting him at all. Then in the tournament when his sensei says "Sweep the leg" he acts horrified. Why was it such a big deal to "sweep the leg" on someone that he hated?

Johnny in fact did not want to put Daniel in a body bag therefore ruining his chances of a Karate scholarship to Cal St. Fullerton.

He was insulted at the idea he had to cheat to beat Daniel.

he wanted to prove he could beat him fairly. Johnny was a competitor.

In the semifinal he had one of his guys purposely DQ to hurt him so he wouldn't go to the final. Johnny seen that for the dick move it was.

Also being a douche to Daniel in private is one thing but sweeping the leg in a public place made him look bad.

Does he?

Daniel shows up as the new kid trying to "White Knight" for a girl who had caught his eye and sucker punches Johnny in the beak. Beat down ensues.

Then he gets Johnny with his little water prank at the dance and beat down ensues.

Johnny even told him:
quote:

"you couldn't leave well enough alone could you, you little twerp. You had to push it. Now you're going to pay."

I'm sorry about this being from HIMYM, but it's appropriate.

He even says "no. I can beat him" or something like that. Daniel did push it, but Johnny et al constantly harassed him. I think the apology from the kid who injured him and Johnny's shock were due to the fact that they were basically clean cut kids who were dicks, but they still had enough class to realize how dirty that was.

I think the biggest douche in that movie was Freddy Fernandez.

Dude takes Daniel in and then bails on him when he gets his arse kicked. Then at the end he is back lifting Daniel up when he is victorious. What a prick.

And I've always been on the Johnny side of this debate.

Douche rating:

Freddy
Daniel
Johnny

Well the first page of this thread is blowing my mind. I never looked at Daniel for what he is. He deserved every beating he got, didn't he? And he did not deserve the tutelage of Mr. Miyagi. Smmfh

Has it been mentioned that the whole all valley tournament is under 18, yet in part III Daniel signs a lease for the bonsai business and mike Barnes wants 50% stake in cobra Kai dojos?

For a couple dudes under 18, those are quite some accomplishments

Yep, watched it again last week and I even mentioned this fact to the wife. It seems we are to believe Johnny was oblivious to his sensei's credo the entire time he was training? He didn't seem to mind beating Daniel while he was completely incapacitated in an earlier scene near the fence. And he showed no signs of changing his attitude towards Daniel until this last scene? Even going so far as to say," you are the best!" Not at all believable.

Why in the film is a Japanese man teaching a Chinese Martial Art, and why is the film named after Korean Martial Arts?

I've read through most of the thread, except perhaps some of serial long quotes (Jesus, Coco...) and there are some good points made. Except for Droplinebacker - he made no good points.

Daniel Laruso is a classic passive-aggressive manipulator, to be sure. He tries to win Ali affection by whatever means available, and when his direct physical attacks fail, he tries more indirect means. Notably, although Ali never looks down on Daniel poverty, he uses her family's wealthy status against her, to make her feel guilty and feel like she owes him. He taunts the Cobra Kai's during the truce, which is in very bad faith and should have been viewed as breaching the agreement, but anyway.

Karate Kid is not about bullying, or fighting, or courage, it's about one thing. Pussy. Pussy is the driving force behind literally everything that happens in this movie. It's the reason Daniel-san and Johnny and the Cobra Kais initially get into conflict. Pussy is the reason they stay in and escalate the conflict. Johnny - this guy can have any chick in school, but does he move on? No, he is also obsessed with one particular vajay. Pussy is the reason Daniel is motivated to learn to fight and even wins at the Tourney. Without pussy, he never would have gotten back out on that mat.

Hell, look at the Patriarch of the movie: pussy is even the reason Miyagi perseveres and thrives - pussy he hasn't seen in 40 frickING years. This master of karate and life in general is still hung up on pussy from many decades ago! He never even married and had kids because of his fixation.

Perhaps it's a warning to young men who put the pussy on a pedestal or allow it to ruin their lives? Perhaps it's a testament to what a man inspired by pussy can accomplish? Maybe both? But make no mistake friends, this movie is about clam.

And don't get me started on Karate Kid 2.

Johnny was transgender and was offended by his sensei's sexist demand for him to sweep something.
