Was it front and back?

Front. It is pretty standard for the Senior Service Colleges. It is not truly a "thesis" but is (in fact) referred to as a "Strategic Research Project." Semantics I would guess. For the record, everyone that is a student at the Army War College already has a masters degree from another university.

I had a lot of my senior officers speak highly of ILE and the War College - almost convinced me to stay in just to be with some of the folks with whom I'd be in class.

Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure I'd have to re-class given where I live, and that just ain't happening to this chest-pounding 11A.

I consider myself tremendously blessed to have been a resident USAWC student. It was an incredible experience (visits to NYC and Washington DC, strategic exercises, interagency and international fellows, etc). Did CGSOC by box of books while in Afghanistan.

Plenty of opportunities for knuckle draggers in the Reserve Components actually. You know what they want more than anything? Someone who knows what right looks like and cares. They will follow you anywhere.

How do they select people for classes at the war college?

Actually, this has been a point of contention for quite some time. The reality is, you are supposed to look at a strategic topic and think how you would present a solution/policy recommendation to DA, DoD, NSC or POTUS. So, it is not a "thesis" in the strictest sense of the word.

Mine was on Health Readiness in the Army Reserve (huge issue from cost savings).

For the most part (military), they are former battalion commanders (or equivalent) that have truly separated themselves (evaluations, assignments, education). Most of them had served on their service staff (Army, Navy, etc) or joint staff in the Pentagon (I had not). There are also civilian (interagency) and foreign students (international fellows). My class was 241 students.

Honestly? It is an extremely tough cut. A tremendous honor and distinction.
