Ok well If he tears it off, that's about right price-wise for a quality architectule shingle. Tell him you'd rather just shingle over the existing roof and save you some money.

If you are on the Gulf Coast, do not do this. Unless they are using long nails, high winds will peel those things like a satsuma...
