+1 for a good ole snapper rear-engine, single blade. You won't be able to kill it. Drive disk may slip a little in tall, wet grass, but it'll teach him patience

Those things last 30 years. Dunno about the new ones though because I haven't ever messed with one.

OP, I'd look at a used commercial one. See if you can bring someone who knows what they are doing to the purchase and make sure there aren't thousands on repairs needed
