i can understand if you'er also doing another major or some science work, so you can look good on a med or whatever type of other interview

but most people who major in the humanities are just wasting their time and money. your degree will be worthless. all jobs that you would have gotten 30 years ago are being outsourced, and will continue to be outsourced.

i can understand if you like it and i understand it's important to know how to write and express your thoughts, but do that in your own time. go to college to become educated in something that will provide you with a decent job. and while doing that, read at least one non-science book a week, and you'll be more educated than most humanities degreed people.

i think most major in things like psych-english-history because they have a slight interest in it and they know they don't have to work hard to get the degree. so college is just four or five years of fun.

Not everybody goes to college to learn a trade. Some people actually want to broaden their minds.

Buddha save us from a world run entirely by engineers and finance majors

Because other than a few, degrees don't mean much.

Not necessarily. Business schools are admitting more people from humanities backgrounds. And, there are studies out there showing that fine arts majors can actually earn more over the course of their lives than those from more technical backgrounds.

i believe in education and developing my critical thinking. the humanities were not a waste of time in that regard

your degree will be worthless

not true

and i don't view college as a trade school

you are right about this, and that's the fault of the colleges. multiple choice tests and keeping kids legal to keep enrollments up

sociology at LSU was a fricking joke

They major in subjects that interest them rather than in subjects that will employ them

The blowhard hippies who think they are changing the world give those majors a bad name.

Everyone needs some fine arts in their lives.

ETA: my brother in law majored in English and is now a Financial Adviser and CFP at Wells Fargo. I am kind of jealous of that because he knows a lot about literature and still got a good job. He majored in something he liked. I know he isn't the norm, but still kinda neat.

Congratulations. That is literally the stupidest shite I have ever read here. And I have read some amazingly dumb things. You really knocked that one out of the park.

I majored in English. Terrible decision. Life ruined. Humanities professors are the actually the worst kind people in the world. I would rather associate with hard core criminals than humanities professors. I'm not joking.

I have a doctorate in polymer chemistry but took a ton of humanity type classes as an undergraduate. I did it because I was interested in subjects like history, sociology and philosophy.

My well rounded background has been a boon to me as I advanced up the career ladder with major corporations. Though, I have always had to battle (and laugh at) the Engineer types who are not able to think outside of the programming that they are given.

Because many are told they HAVE to get a degree or they are failures at life. Some of t hese same people often have no ambitions or goals so they major in something they are either interested in or are told is easy to eventually find out they have no job openings and crippling debt.

Higher education and studying the humanities is great for intellectual gain but don't be an idiot and expect a high paying job in your field when you majored in women's and gender studies focusing on the years of 1580-1600.

First, most degrees don't matter. Outside of Pre-Med and Law, degrees are just a proof of determination and the ability to finish something relatively successfully.

There's a reason that the first three degrees were the BA, the MD, the JD. That's it. The BA was extremely variable. All the crap today didn't come until way later.

Second, College is not a trade school. You aren't going to college to "Get a job." It isn't built that way, therefore, when it was forced to function like that because culture/society pushed the concept of the American Dream which included a college degree, it began to implode. Now, it's completely messed up with rising costs, businesses outsourcing training to colleges forcing menial, low-paying jobs to require degrees when they don't have to, policy makers creating/establishing/changing to get a college in their town of 50,000 people, and parents continually impressing in their kids that college is the only thing that can get them a job.

i can understand if you like it and i understand it's important to know how to write and express your thoughts, but do that in your own time.

This is all you think a humanities degree inspires?

That's rich.
