Buy your pots and then and have dirt in them, ready to plant. Then take the pics of what you like to the nursery (not Home Depot or Lowes) and explained what you are looking for and let them make recommendation...

Take a look at this site, I have some like this at home and I believe its something you might like. These are low maint and easy to grow.

If you get those pots like Wick posted, make sure you either get the ones with casters on the bottom or a separate caster wheel base to go underneath it. That way in the winter you can wheel them up in the house to keep them from dying on really cold nights. You'll also want to be able to move them to clean the cement underneath them, otherwise you'll have black circles on your pretty concrete.

If the area gets enough sunlight, you might want to consider planting some dwarf citrus trees.
I have had success with kumquats, lemons, & limes in barrel tubs .
There are a lot on resources on the interwebz for growing dwarf citrus in containers. I was amazed at how well some of my plants produced.
Also, if the weight of the barrel tubs is an issue, just screw some durable casters to the bottom before planting. It will make them easy to move indoors before high winds or freezing temps.

Thank you for the suggestion but that is way too country cookin for my taste. I like the pottery type planters. I also saw one at lowes today that was mirrored and it was gorg!
