I always tell parents who are concerned that their child will be behind in sports if they don't start them really early that puberty is the great equalizer.

Not a pediatrician, but I think there are two developmental aspects to look at: physical development and mental development.

For physical development: you can look at the child's growth charts to see what (%) he/she is vs. their age... And see what age is average with their height and weight.

A more detailed method of measuring physical development and age is by obtaining the child's bone age. Basically an x-ray of their hands and compare the maturity of their bone to an established bone age atlas.

CDC growth charts

As for mental development there is the Denver Scale to assess developmental milestones. More detailed test included things like IQ and others.

Why is it a dumb question? The poster above you got it right with the hand bone answer, but I have no way to measure it myself.

Son has tested at 99% for physical AND mental tests vs chronological age so I'm wondering is he maturing fast or just "different"

Eta: by tests I mean elite performance in sports and the end of year common core tests.

Don't worry. He will soon discover drugs, alcohol, pussy, porn on the net, and end up like every other regular mortal human male. Sorry, but enjoy it while it last.

I'm just hopeful he won't be gunned down like his brother.

God willing, we'll help people along whatever path his life takes.
