Fine, make them part of Maryland.

Joy. 2 more senators for Obama. Next all metro areas will get senate and house representation. I agree that should they get statehood, which I strongly oppose, everyone who works there should have to vote there.
Maryland and VA have already ceded control to these people.
ETA - They already have house representation, just not senate.

Making DC a state defeats the entire purpose of DC.
No it doesn't. Though it's hard to see how such an entity would be - in practice - a state like other states - since the Constitution says Congress exercises all legislative power over DC. (They could pass laws applying to DC that they could not apply to other states). But the Constitution does not forbid DC from becoming a state.
quote:
Maybe they can make it a state, set aside some other non-state federal territory for a capital, not allow people to live there permanently, and this time MEAN IT!
I have no idea why you think people were ever not allowed to live in DC permanently.
I'm not sure DC should be a state, but they shouldn't be subject to taxation without representation. I'm sure the Tea Partiers would agree with me.

Obama is a complete dumbass. That idiot should be tarred and feathered and run out of town on a rail.

There has been a proposal that would make DC part of a Maryland Congressional district - but for all other purposes it would be separate from Maryland.
It makes more sense to me just to give them representation in the House as if they were a state. No Senate representation - as they are not a state - and hence do not require it. However, they are people - so they should have voting representation in the House.

This is nothing more than a scheme to add two more senators to the democratic coalition.

Obviously, but why shouldn't those US citizens get representation?

So the frick what.
I don't understand how you could be for Affirmative Action GOP sitting on the District of Columbia City Council when nobody wanted them there. They are required by congress to have 2 minority party spots on the Council.
I don't understand how you could be for House GOP refusing to approve DC budget unless it includes an amendment preventing them from legalizing or decriminalizing marijuana.
The new law DC proposes sets criminal penalties for possession of one ounce of marijuana at a $25 civil fine. DC has no control over their own residence tax collected budget.
How about we we allow DC to at least have control over their budget collected from their population. Nope... Since the 90s, GOP would only let that happen if the bill included amendments which include some variation of Abortion, Gun Rights, Private school vouchers, Labor unions, Drugs enforcement ect. Basically overriding the will of the people to further their agenda.
The GOP have no problem B****** about states right ,but have no problem enforcing their will on DC residences.
I don't understand how certain members of the GOP can support Puerto Rico Rico Statehood and oppose DC Statehood. They get a pass because they Vote GOP more.
Whatever happened to no Taxation without representation?
Its funny you guys think its just about Senate Seats. Its also about being able to manage your district more effectively.
How about we give DC the same rights as other states without representation in the senate? Now, you can't cry anymore.
The amount of conservatives waving the libertarian banner on these forums is funny. However, the banner goes away when it no longer helps them.
Fun Fact:
quote:
According to Freedom House there are 90 democracies in the world today. Of those 90 democracies only the United States denies its capital residents full representation before its national legislature. Of those 90 democracies only the United States restricts the legislative authority of its capital representatives. Finally, other democracies that once restricted representation for their capital residents largely removed those restrictions. The last holdout was Brazil which granted full representation to the citizens of Brasilia in 1986.
I have question for people like Sentrius. Do you believe DC would of been a state a long time ago if it wasn't so Democrat leaning?
Posted on 7/22/14 at 1:41 am to Socratics
Socratics, making DC a state would defeat the purpose of why it exists in the first place. The very creation of DC, and the moving of the capital there from Philadelphia, was because of the concern that the capital being in a state would unfairly benefit that state, and add conflicting interests.
On a more practical note, there is no law that says DC residents have to live there.

Untrue. The Republicans are fast at work winning over the black vote as we speak.

Good point.
BUt does the Constitution expressly forbid it?
Seems to me the situation would be the opposite - DC wouldn't really be a full state since Congress would have all legislative power.

Maryland should just annex DC, problem solved. Oh, and they would take along Fairfax county areas along with DC.

I have four words that explain why DC should never be a state:
The first word is Senator. The second is Eleanor. The third is Holmes. The final and fourth word is Norton.

there has been talk for years to have the residentual portions of DC become part of Maryland and leave certain buildings, monuments, etc as part of the federal district.
DC residents do NOT want to become part of Maryland.
DC residents DO want voting representation in Congress. I think that's fair.

So we should deny black people representation because you don't like black people.
