As kids we would go swimming in the ponds on the golf course at night to fish out golf balls. Most of the ponds had at least one gator. We never had problems

and kids are much more likely to be attacked (mistaken for prey) because of their size. We swam where they had gators growing up.

Would never even think of doing that around salties or nile crocs

LA actually has more alligators than FL but there are more residential areas in FL where alligators are present. That should explain the differences in the numbers of killed by state.

I can't believe that no one from LA has been killed by alligators since the 70s though. That seems weird.

I remember going water skiing in Lake Cataouatche, we stopped at some little camp on the water and had lunch. We pulled up to the dock and ate lunch an swam around the boat and stuff. We all got back in to the boat to get back to skiing and as we were pulling away from the dock I looked back and watched one after another alligator poke it's head out the water right where we were swimming. That definitely freaked me out as a kid.
