The masters is too much about augusta, us open too much about par, and the british too european... I like the pga bc it's a damn good golf tournament and you dont have another major for 8 months...

Masters is the best spectacle
US Open is probably hardest to win and the most prestigious.
British is the most historic
PGA is basically like another tournament with its huge field.

I agree with all of this.

This is a good summary, with a couple caveats.

I think the Masters still has the most prestige. Winning the Master, for most, is still the most coveted I think.

The PGA is jumping off point. It's not just another tournament, although it usually isn't that interesting. I prefer the Players to watch, but the PGA is about the same as far as prestige and career.

if the masters weren't the first major every year would the ranking change for anyone?

i think a lot of the allure of the masters is the build up to the first major

Masters has several things going for it. This may be one, but I don't think it's too determinative. Others would be:

Exclusivity - Hard to play the course, impossible to get membership, potentially the hardest and most expensive ticket in sports.

Venue - Only major that doesn't move. While this could be a negative to some, I think the familiarity for casual golf watchers helps. Everyone in the South watches the Masters. Most sports fans watch some of it, and all golf fans watch it. So unlike rotating venues, especially where the layouts are more difficult to recall or follow (Most Open courses and Merion come to mind), a lot of casual fans can picture iconic holes at Augusta and it makes following rounds easier. It also helps the average viewer to understand challenges and what constitutes amazing play.

Consistency and Aesthetics - It's like a green carpet, and it is always perfect. There aren't mud pits. There isn't a bunch of scrub grass. The weather isn't usually problematic, and it's gorgeous on TV.

Yeah, I really can't stand Hootie and the Clan, Jim Nantz waxing nostalgic, limited coverage, etc., etc. I also used to think it was weak that players would torch this course, but struggle at the US/British. Now, with guys posting crazy numbers at the other majors and a lot of people saying how great Augusta is in person, I am coming around on it. But, I still don't really like it.

1. British, when held at The Old Course in St. Andrew's, is my personal favorite.
2. Masters
3. US
4. PGA

Augusta is the biggest white trash shithole in the entire United States, and for one week a year they get to pretend like it doesn't suck total arse to live there.

What a joke it's all become. They lost all credibility when they let Edlrick's tpos arse cheat imo.

I don't even want tickets to that tournament. I'd rather play la tour that weekend anyway.
