The formula is supposed to account for, this, as much as mathematically possible. We based ours on it with some tweaks.
It didn't though. Within hours of its release, The Dark Knight had supplanted The Godfather as the #1 film on the list. I remember that time. You had trolls galore giving The Godfather a 1 out of 10 rating trying to keep The Dark Knight at #1. As a result, The Shawshank Redemption came out of nowhere to occupy the #1 spot, which it has remained successful at doing for the last 6 years now.
The Dark Knight fell as far as #10 and has slowly been creeping its way back up since that time.
I am a long-time user of IMDB and I have to say that was my second favorite moment in the history of that website. The first, of course, being back in 2005 when IMDB asked users to pick what movies they thought were the best of the year.
Mugglenet.com, the world's largest Harry Potter website, advertised this and had their users go on over and write in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The result was hilarious. People didn't even bother reading the category. They just filled in Harry Potter for everything. So by the next day, you had Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire winning in categories like Best Documentary - Short Subject.
CSB, I know, but it was funny.

I'm not arguing it's sound. It's clearly broken and they never changed it. ??
Math can't be internet mobs. Just not possible.
And that's why:

IMDB does two things wrong: Publicizes the formula and doesn't trust people to vote with their gut, not against the formula.
And doesn't it change it significantly. We did.

Imdb should have a grace period before people can vote.
The dark knight was on there with thousands of 10 stars by 2am it's release date.
The list is too reactionary too newer movies
Yeah this is the problem I have with it. Some new movie comes out that's popular and all of sudden it's shoots past established classics that have been around for decades.
I love IMDB especially the my list feature which allows me to keep track of all my movies. But the 250 is utterly worthless to me. Cause of this thread it was actually the first time I even looked at the 250 in the past five years if not longer that's how irrelevant it is to me even though I'm on IMDB all the time.

Rotk imo is on signantfully lower tier than the first two.
Jaws should be in top 5.
Jaws should be in top 5.

To be fair, I think Shawshank has earned the #1 spot on its own accord.
It's received better than 1,000,000 votes with a 9.3/10 average rating.
It's definitely #1 for me personally, and anyone in this thread laughing at it sitting at the top needs to re-evaluate their life.

Return of the king is my personal favorite movie of all time. Go watch that scene of the charge down the hill! Goosebumps!

Too low or too high?
Personally, I wouldn't rank it that high, but it makes sense. It IS one of those fabled Hollywood films that's just awesome. It's also crazy influential and ambitious for it's time.

Not a single Nolan film in the Top 20.
