Okay, I'll give you a list to make it run much better, and probably get better mileage. This will cost a few hundred dollars to do though.
New air filter or complete intake
Clean MAF sensor
Clean throttle body
New plugs(probably go ahead and get wires; I always break at least one removing them and they are cheap)
Flush cooling system with a detergent
Seafoam upper intake
Gumout Regane or some injector cleaner
Fuel filter(kind of a PITA, but might as well do it)
Auto-rx
Change engine oil, transmission fluid, and differential fluids to a good synthetic
Some exhaust kit
Decide if you want your tires to wear properly or get you better mileage and adjust accordingly
Can't think of anything else because I am not looking at an engine right now. All of those can pretty easily be done in your driveway. Plugs and wires are aggravating because there isn't much room to get to the #7 and 8 cylinders. Fuel filter is a PITA because you have to drop half of the tank and finagle your way in there. I haven't screwed with a newer 5.3, so all of that stuff applies to pre-07 stuff
Eta: Might as well swap belt(s) if you're gonna be in there and check idler/tensioner pulleys. You can also use the time to look at things like ball joints to catch something before it becomes a problem
